# Connect your AI tool to the Operata docs

> Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or another AI tool to the Operata docs over the Model Context Protocol, so it can search and read these pages while it answers you.

Connect your AI tool to the Operata docs so it searches these pages when it answers a question. Ask "How do I install the Agent Collector on Amazon Connect?" and your AI tool reads the current install guide instead of guessing from its training data.

The docs connection uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP). It's read-only, and it returns only the pages your docs access lets you see. It's separate from the [Operata MCP Server](https://docs.operata.com/docs/guides-mcp-intro.md), which queries your contact center data.

## Before you start

* **Choose a server URL.** The docs have two:

  | Server | URL | What it returns |
  | - | - | - |
  | **Signed in** | `https://docs.operata.com/authed/mcp` | Every page your docs account can see, including user guides behind the login. |
  | **Public** | `https://docs.operata.com/mcp` | Public pages only. No sign-in. |

  Use the signed-in server if you have an Operata login. Use the public server if you don't, or for an automated tool that can't open a browser.
* **A supported AI tool:** Claude (claude.ai, Claude Desktop, or Claude Code), ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, or another tool that supports remote MCP servers.
* **Admin enablement, on some plans.** On Claude Team and Enterprise, a workspace admin may need to enable custom connectors (**Organization settings** > **Connectors**). On ChatGPT Team, Enterprise, and Edu, a workspace admin may need to enable Developer mode.

You don't need a token or API key. The signed-in server uses the same login you use to read gated pages on this site.

## Steps

1. Add the server to your AI tool, using the tab for your tool below. The examples use the signed-in URL. For the public server, swap in `https://docs.operata.com/mcp`.
2. If you chose the signed-in server, sign in when your browser opens the docs login, then return to your AI tool.

> [tab] Claude
>
> In claude.ai or Claude Desktop, go to **Customize** > **Connectors** and add a custom connector. Enter the server URL:
>
> ```text theme={null}
> https://docs.operata.com/authed/mcp
> ```
>
> Sign in when prompted. To use it in a chat, turn it on from the **+** button.

> [tab] ChatGPT
>
> Go to **Settings** > **Connectors**. Under **Advanced**, turn on **Developer mode**. Select **Create** and enter the server URL:
>
> ```text theme={null}
> https://docs.operata.com/authed/mcp
> ```
>
> Sign in when prompted.

> [tab] Claude Code
>
> Add the server:
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> claude mcp add --transport http operata-docs https://docs.operata.com/authed/mcp
> ```
>
> Then run `/mcp` inside Claude Code and sign in through your browser.

> [tab] Cursor
>
> Add an `operata-docs` entry under `mcpServers` in `~/.cursor/mcp.json`, or in `.cursor/mcp.json` for a single project:
>
> ```json ~/.cursor/mcp.json theme={null}
> {
>   "mcpServers": {
>     "operata-docs": {
>       "url": "https://docs.operata.com/authed/mcp"
>     }
>   }
> }
> ```
>
> Restart Cursor and sign in when prompted.

> [tab] VS Code
>
> Run **MCP: Add Server** from the Command Palette, or add an entry under `servers` in `.vscode/mcp.json`:
>
> ```json .vscode/mcp.json theme={null}
> {
>   "servers": {
>     "operata-docs": {
>       "type": "http",
>       "url": "https://docs.operata.com/authed/mcp"
>     }
>   }
> }
> ```
>
> Sign in when prompted.

You can also connect from any docs page. Open the page menu next to the page title and select **Connect to Cursor** or **Connect to VS Code**. Both install the signed-in server.

## Verify

Ask your AI tool a question the docs answer:

* "Using the Operata docs, what does the Agent Collector collect?"
* "What are the prerequisites for connecting Genesys Cloud to Operata?"
* "Find the Operata API endpoint for listing calls."

The answer cites pages on `docs.operata.com`. You don't need to name a tool — your AI tool picks one. The connection provides three tools:

| Tool | What it does |
| - | - |
| `search_operata_docs` | Searches the docs and returns matching snippets with titles and links. |
| `query_docs_filesystem_operata_docs` | Reads full pages and the API spec, using read-only shell-style commands over a virtual copy of the docs. |
| `submit_feedback` | Reports a page that's wrong, out of date, or unclear to the Operata docs team. |

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Fix |
| - | - |
| Answers miss user guides you can read in the browser. | You're connected to the public server. Switch the URL to `https://docs.operata.com/authed/mcp` and sign in. |
| The signed-in server returns an authorization error. | Your session expired. Reconnect the server in your AI tool and sign in again. |
| Claude or ChatGPT has no option to add a custom connector. | Your workspace admin needs to enable custom connectors (Claude) or Developer mode (ChatGPT). |
| Your AI tool answers without using the docs. | Start your question with "Using the Operata docs," or check the connector is turned on for the chat. |
| You want to disconnect. | Remove the connector or server entry from your AI tool's settings or config file. |
